Be it graduation, summer ball or birthday, there’s one uninvited guest you can always count on to attend – that annoying spot! Origins think they’ve cooked up a solution to this problem in a tiny bottle. They call it the Super Spot Remover, and is one of their best sellers, with some calling it “a magical solution”.
The protagonist- Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid is known to help the shedding of old, dead skin cells from the outermost layer of skin (the stratum corneum) by loosening them at a cellular level. This helps unclog the blocked pores at the centre of acne development, to help resolve and prevent spots. Salicylic acid is also thought to act as an anti-inflammatory, which should help reduce the redness and swelling of the spot.
BUT salicylic acid has another trick up its sleeve – it’s been shown to help with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. PIH is the darkened skin tone seen after inflammation, like after an angry spot has taken its leave!

Moisturizers
Acne therapies can leave the skin dry and irritated, often because they strip the natural moisture from the skin while tackling oiliness. To try and avoid this problem, Origins have included moisturisers in their Super Spot Remover. Moisturizers come in 3 main flavours: occlusives, humectants, and emollients (many moisturisers have more than one of these properties). Occlusives block the loss of water from the skin while humectants hydrate the upper layers (the epidermis) by drawing water from the lower layers (the dermis). Emollients moisturizes by filling skin spaces with oil droplets.
Glycerin, butelyene glycol and lactic acid in the Super Spot Remover are mainly thought to moisturize by being humectants, while occlusive and emollient moisturizers seem largely absent. This is a bit of a double-edged beauty sword. On the one hand, skin is moisturized, but susceptible to water loss because there aren’t occlusive to block evaporation, but on the other hand not over-doing the moisture with lipid-heavy emollients might be a good move for avoiding blocked pores (oil combines with dead cells to block the pores!). It’s a bit of a beauty dilemma…
